EDUCATION

  • ONE of the uses of the internet is as a tool to learn . Depending on your interests , you can use the World Wide Web to access almost any information you want .
  • Many people search for information about studying abroad. www.berkeleycollege.edu offers on-line applications for students all over the world and the website www.studyabroadlinks.com has links to the websites of international institute .You can search by country or subject .
  • Others websites are more useful to educate yourself from your home computer or from a cyber cafe . For children , the website www.education.com/kids is a fun and easy way to learn about subjects like geography , nature , science and technology .This is perfect if you need information for a class presentation or project . For every subject there is about one page with text . Picture are not included but if you go to the search engine www.google.com you can search for pictures concerning your chosen subject .
  • If you are interested in learning a foreign language , the internet again may be your best bet . Go to www.ielts.org for more information about English test . You can also download and print the Ielts Handbook Sept 2003 . www.learntospeak.com includes slide shows from many countries around the world . If you have speaker attached to your computer , www.bbc.co.uk/languages allows you to listen to the correct prounuciation of the words in German , French or other languages , free of charge . My favourite websites to overcome language barriers is www.babelfish.altavista.com .
  • There you type any text you want , click on the 'translate' buttom and within seconds your text is on the screen in that language . Babel fish comes from the famous novel Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy , in which the 'babel fish' was poked into the ear and could translate any alien language encountered . Of course , don't expect this website to help you talk to martians , but it does help with more earthly languaes......
  • How about learning to cook? Go to www.allrecipes.com . It has recipes of the day with the ability to change portion numbers and learn the nutritional content .
  • For more information on education , go to a search engine like www.google.com or www.yahoo.com and type a keyword like "education" , "learning" or simply the subject you want to know more about .

Happy surfing!
